“Working in the Sixth Form affords me the opportunity to have a positive impact on students at one of the most pivotal times of their development.”
Rhi Clancy, Head of Sixth Form
Studying and socialising in a bespoke environment
Wolverhampton Grammar School Sixth Form is the pinnacle of our students’ time with us. Some will have started in the Juniors, some in the Seniors, but in their final two years, as young adults, our Sixth Formers will enjoy studying and socialising in their own bespoke Sixth Form Centre.
This brings with it greater independence, support from their House tutors, the advantages of small teaching groups, and the opportunity to take on leadership roles and volunteer for extra activities that will build on life skills, as well as enhance personal statements for UCAS applications too.
This stepping stone to university life, apprenticeships or future employment ensures that, whilst continuing with the House system and the vast range of extra-curricular activities, students can expect to enjoy greater responsibilities and freedoms that reflect their maturity and position within the School.
It is a perfect opportunity to welcome new students and indeed many do join us at Sixth Form to experience life at WGS. We offer a wide range of subjects to choose from and the very best support and advice to ensure students make the right choices for their future.
“As part of Medsoc, which is run by Upper Sixth students, I’ve learnt lots of tips and tricks to help me with my studies and with my university application. This has definitely given me a better foot forward for when I apply.”
"At WGS, I've discovered new opportunities to pursue my dreams with the help of the careers department. If you're looking for a place to thrive and reach your full potential, WGS is the perfect choice."
"The teachers are incredibly supportive and have consistently shown a genuine interest in my learning, going above and beyond. Their unwavering support and our diverse environment allows me to have equal opportunities to succeed."
Your happiness matters
Entering Sixth Form is another big step in your educational journey and you may need some support to help you settle, particularly if you are joining from another school.
Rest assured, there is plenty on offer to make the transition to our upper years seamless. Enviable student to teacher ratios ensures staff really get to know you and can help you get the most out of your time at WGS.
We prioritise your happiness and our pastoral team, which includes our Head of Wellbeing, has plenty of great ideas to make your time at Wolverhampton Grammar School a successful and memorable one.
Where students need support and guidance our excellent Sixth Form team, as well as the House tutors, are there to guide and students also have access to our School Counsellor.
Sixth Form life
Sixth Form is not all about study! Students are involved in many clubs and subject based societies including Graphic Design, Digital Leaders, Magic Club, Table-Top Gaming, Student Parliament and many more.
Lunchtime Pudding lectures are another tenet of Sixth Form life and give students the opportunity to present and take questions on a variety of topics beyond their Sixth Form studies. Aptly named, there is always cake served for those attending and presenting!
There are also opportunities to step up into Prefect leadership roles such as House Captains and Heads of School. Within the House system Sixth Formers act as mentors to younger students and take part in charity fundraising and community activities. Sport, Music, volunteering and the Duke of Edinburgh Award are all accessible to our Sixth Formers. We also have our own student-run newspaper – The Wulf, and students have input into organising events such as the Leavers’ Ball.
"WGS has been a very enjoyable experience for me. The School allowed me to explore different opportunities to pursue my aspirations in medicine. The teachers have guided me in the right direction for my future."
" My favourite element is the vast range of extra-curricular activities available to everyone. The support from the mentors and teachers around me have encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and find something new to broaden my school experiences."
“My favourite thing about WGS is the community. The students and teachers treat each other with kindness and respect and will bend over backwards to aid you at any given moment. I have always struggled with making decisions about my future and the expert staff have helped me greatly with my transition into sixth form.
“The open events, induction days and information evenings meant I was fully informed about the subjects I wanted to take and what to expect from sixth Form. This has enabled me to study subjects I love whilst feeling confident that they will help in pursuing my chosen career."
“The first thing that struck me was the frictionless transition from Year 11 into the Sixth Form. This feeling was enhanced through the wide range of facilities such as the Sixth Form library, that we can use during our free periods. Not only is it a quiet working place for us, it also prepares us for university life.
"WGS has allowed me to balance my sporting career with academic work by allowing time off on Wednesday afternoon for training. When competing in challenging competitions the School have boosted my confidence as well as congratulating me on my success."
“In an environment as friendly as WGS, it is an incredibly quick process to feel at ease and supported. Having such a diverse school curriculum including sport, dance and music allows you to make lifelong friends and connections.”
Natalie, Sixth Form Student
