A* – B grades are the best in over 10 years at Wolverhampton Grammar School
Students from Wolverhampton Grammar School consistently do well in examinations across our extensive range of subjects.
The percentage of our 2023 cohort awarded grades A* to B at A Level this year is 74%, up 2% on last year and the highest for 10 years in formal examinations. This has been reflected in an increase of 20% of students gaining their first choice offer from one of the prestigious Russell Group universities, including 7 students who will go on to study medicine, veterinary science and at Oxford University.
Wolverhampton Grammar School has clearly bucked the national trend with a stellar crop of results which has put a smile on everyone’s face. Speculation was rife that the move to bring back pre-Covid grade distributions would affect grades negatively across the country but in fact the percentage of Upper Sixth students at WGS awarded with the top A* to A grades was 46% of this year’s cohort, up 13% on 2019 gradings. An impressive 19% of students this year were awarded an A* with 5 students achieving straight A*s. Two of these were awarded a remarkable 4 straight A* grades and secured their places to study Maths and Engineering at Oxford University. All students studying the vocational Cambridge Technicals achieved a Merit or higher.
We congratulate all our Sixth Formers on their outstanding results at A Level and Cambridge Technical.
The results in brief:
- Almost half the cohort achieved ABB or better at A Level
- 46% A* and A awarded at A Level
- 74% A* – B awarded at A Level
- 100% of students gained a Merit or higher in the Cambridge Technicals
- 5 students achieved 3 A* or higher, including two students with 4 A*
- 100% of students achieved A* – B in their Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
Reflecting on the performance of this year’s cohort, Acting Head Nic Anderson comments,
“I am extremely proud of all our students, they have shown great commitment to their studies and their hard work has been justly rewarded with a fantastic set of results which our whole school community are proud of. I thank my staff for their dedicated teaching and for preparing our students so well for their examinations and onward pathway to university.
I am proud to continue the legacy of my predecessor, Alex Frazer, in ensuring our sustained academic achievement and celebrating our 2023 results. This year’s results clearly show that our students have continued to progress year on year and our academic attainment is stronger than ever, post-pandemic.”
