Connecting Curious Minds

Since the start of this academic year, the Development team has welcomed back a number of Old Wulfrunians (OWs), both virtually and in person. All really enjoyed catching up with one or more of their former teachers, meeting students, and seeing how School has changed since they were last here.

Sophie Hickman and Anna Herritty (both OW 2018) joined Year 11 and Lower Sixth Design and Technology lessons to talk about studying design-related courses at university: Sophie studied Product & Furniture Design at Birmingham City University and Anna is currently undertaking a year in industry as part of her degree in Product Design & Engineering at the University of Nottingham.

Working closely with the School’s Careers Adviser, Mrs Sarah Hind, the team was able to help a current Upper Sixth student unsure of the next steps to a future in ‘Design’. Connecting virtually with Holly Pleydell (OW 2016) and Eve Cowan (OW 2015), the student was able to hear first-hand about their experiences and gain further understanding of the different study routes available. Holly chose a three-year distance learning course in Interior Design through the National Design Academy whilst Eve studied Graphic Communication and Illustration at Loughborough University.

Business Studies and Economics students benefited greatly from a visit from Martin Duffell CBE (OW 1981). As Head of Dealing for the UK Debt Management Office, Martin was able to bring a different dimension to the classroom. Asked what guidance he would give to his younger self during a question and answer session, Martin advised: “Appreciate where you are, study something that interests you and do something that you love.” Great advice Martin – thank you!
