How to Apply

We appreciate that applying for a place at an independent school for the first time can feel a little daunting. The information available here should provide you with everything that you need to know and please be assured that you are welcome to contact our Admissions Registrar at any time to talk through the process step by step.

Contact the Admissions Registrar, Jane Morris by post, telephone or email. Alternatively, our school is open throughout the year (except public holidays) for a personal visit:

How to register for a place

The majority of children join our Junior School at 7 years old for Year 3 although there may be occasional places available in Year 4, Year 5 or our Big 6 (Year 6).

To register for a place at Wolverhampton Grammar Junior School you should complete our Registration Form and return it to our Admissions Registrar. Registration Forms can also be sent to your home address by contacting Jane Morris, Admissions Registrar on 01902 422939 or by email: jam@wgs-sch.net

A registration fee of £25 is required with each application when you return your Registration Form (please note this is non-refundable). Please send the registration fee with your form as we are unable to register your application until the registration fee is received.

We will then invite your child to come in for an assessment with our Junior School.

The assessment and offering a place

Children are welcome to join us for Assessment dates throughout the year (at a time and date to suit you). However, to ensure we can guarantee your child a place in our Junior School for the forthcoming school year we would recommend that you contact us as soon as possible to register your child.

Children joining us in September 2017, will be invited to one of our assessment days in the Spring term:

  • Year 3 entry: Tuesday 7th February 2017
  • Year 3 entry: Wednesday 8th February 2017
  • Year 4 entry: Thursday 9th February 2017
  • Year 5 entry: Tuesday 14th February 2017
  • Year 6 entry: Wednesday 15th February 2017

Our assessment is designed to ensure that your child will be able to access the Junior School curriculum, to provide information for parents on strengths and weaknesses of their child and to provide a clear starting point for teachers at the start of the year. The information we gain from the assessments form the basis of our decision whether to offer a place. We also take into account the child’s most recent school report.

English and Maths are assessed over the course of a morning (children in Year 5 seeking a place in our Year 6 will also take a further assessment in verbal reasoning) and then your child will be able to interact as a group with other current and prospective pupils. Your child is able to begin to form friendships right from the start of their journey with us. The tests provide a wealth of information highlighting strengths and weaknesses and also help indicate where additional support may be required. Whilst many of our children are very strong across a range of subjects, we are able to offer a place for children of average ability. We appreciate that some children may not feel as confident in a particular subject and a child may well be offered a place should we feel that they have the potential and desire to improve. A number of our children receive support in key areas of the curriculum and we have an effective support system in place.

Once the tests are conducted, the Head will contact parents to discuss results, and in all but a few exceptions, to offer a place (which will also be confirmed in writing).

Should your child’s scores be borderline for entry, we may request that the child joins us for an additional day to see how he/she copes in the classroom. Children in Year 2 seeking a place in Year 3 are able to join our Year 3 class for the day. Our experienced teachers are able to provide useful information to, hopefully, allow us to confirm a place.

Assessments can also be arranged at other times in the school year. If you wish to take this opportunity, please contact Jane Morris in our admissions department on 01902 422939.
