If you’re a current Upper Sixth student at Wolverhampton Grammar School studying either Mathematics or Further Mathematics at A Level, you may be eligible to apply for an award worth £1000.

The Graham Lewis Maths Scholarship Award has been made possible following a generous gift from benefactor and alumnus Robert Zeps. Mr Zeps has dedicated this Scholarship in honour of his WGS mathematics teacher Mr Graham Lewis, who inspired him to pursue maths for career and intellectual satisfaction.

The recipient of this Scholarship will receive a tax free lump sum of £1000 to use to support their study of Mathematics (or a related discipline) at University.

Available to any student who is studying Mathematics to full A-level (A2). And also:

  • Can demonstrate their passion for Mathematics and desire to undertake a career that utilises those specific skills and abilities; AND
  • Can demonstrate that they have made a real contribution to the School in terms of support to fellow students i.e. mentoring less able students, clubs, societies or extra-curricular activities; AND
  • Receives, accepts and takes up an offer for a University course that has entry requirements of Mathematics at A* or A grade (not including unconditional offers that are made regardless of grades achieved); AND

Any award will be conditional upon a student achieving an A or A* at full A-level (A2).

What can the Scholarship be used for?

The Scholarship is designed to be used to facilitate a student’s transition to University. The £1,000 can be used to:

  • Support University accommodation or living costs
  • Purchase equipment or resources to help enable the student to make the most of their University studies i.e. a tablet or the costs of essential reading texts, books or any other materials that are required as entry requirements to the degree programme

How to apply: 

Candidates for this award should apply by Tuesday 12th April to the Head with a letter of application outlining:

  • Why you wish to study Mathematics (or related discipline) at university
  • How you fulfil the criteria listed under eligibility
  • How you will use the scholarship

Following the letters of application a short list of candidates will be invited for interview with the Head/Deputy Head (Upper School) and the Head of Mathematics.
