Introduction to the Economics and Business Studies Department

The Department of Economics and Business Studies at Wolverhampton Grammar School prepares and inspires students to work towards and complete A Levels in Business Studies and Economics.

The disciplines of economics and business studies impact society every day. They relate to almost all aspects of our life and are useful disciplines for entrance to other courses at university including Politics, Philosophy, Sociology, Law and History.

There are two members of staff in the Department of Economics and Business Studies:

The department also offers the opportunity to study towards the Certificate in Financial Studies (for Lower Sixth students), the IFS student Investor Challenge as well as a number of extra-curricular activities including the Economics Debating Society and Dragon’s Den.

It is possible for students to take the AQA Economics and AQA Business Studies as two separate A Level subjects.

Economics

The discipline of economics impacts society every day, relating to almost all aspects of our life and is a useful discipline for entrance to courses at university including Politics, Philosophy, Sociology, Law, History, Business, and of course Economics.

AS Level

Unit 3 – Economic Principals and Issues

Business Studies

A Level Business Studies will help students:

  • Develop a critical understanding of organisations, the markets they serve and the process of adding value;
  • Be aware that business behaviour can be studied from the perspectives of a range of stakeholders;
  • Acquire a range of skills including decision-making and problemsolving;
  • Be aware of the current structure of business and business practice.

Assessment

AS Level

  • Unit 1 Business 1 (Business 1 to 3 of the areas listed above). Total weighting 50%, 90 minutes
  • Unit 2 Business 2. Total weighting 50%, 90 minutes

A Level

  • Unit 1 and 2. 33.3% and 2 hours each
  • Unit 3 Business 3 (1-7 of the areas listed above). 33.3% and 2 hours
