Tom Mitchell, Head Groundsman

Wolverhampton Grammar School
Compton Road
West Midlands

City and Guilds – Amenity Horticulture
Higher National Certificate – Horticulture
Member of  The Institute of Groundsmanship

My responsibilities include:
The preparation and maintenance of all sports pitches required by the junior and senior schools. The upkeep and development of our extensive grounds and gardens, to ensure a safe and pleasant environment for students and staff to enjoy. The preparation of sports pitches at the Old Wulfrunians Club, Castlecroft.

I have been involved in the horticultural business since leaving school. Having completed a three year apprenticeship with  Walsall Council  Parks Dept. I have worked at Pelsall Comprehensive School, Withington Girls School Manchester and The University of Birmingham, before joining WGS in 1994.

“As well as the people, what makes WGS special for me is its setting. The site covers around six  hectares and is on three different levels.

There are over 200 mature trees within the campus and around the edge of the playing fields. The School sits within a unique piece of urban parkland on the fringes of a busy City centre and provides an important green space for sport, leisure, learning, a haven for wildlife, and a wonderful environment in which to work.”

In my spare time I enjoy  walking, reading, music, playing the drums and spending time with my family.
