Art at Wolverhampton Grammar School is consistently in the top 2% in terms of exam success nationally and as Head of Art, James is responsible for leading the work of the Art Department across the senior school.

The aim of the department is to bring art to life for every student.

The Art Department is based in a purpose built building with custom designed studios and it’s own double gallery. We have two dedicated members of teaching staff, alongside myself, as well as support from a range of professional technicians. Students have the benefit of working with acclaimed artists in a building that’s purpose built for creating great artwork.

James is EVC (Educational Visits Coordinator) and is also a Year 7 tutor.

Print-making holds a particular fascination for James because of its unique form of expression within the visual arts.

James co-ordinates a number of extra-curricular activities on behalf of the school including annual trips to the Towers in Capel Curig, as well as weekly Warhammer Club, Printmaking Club and the Lower School Cinema Club.

As well as being Head of Art at Wolverhampton Grammar School, James is also a practising artist. He has exhibited work in a number of galleries across the region as well as in London.

He has worked full time at Wolverhampton Grammar School since 2002.

“We work so well as a team here at Wolverhampton Grammar School and all the students enjoy their art lessons. It is great to see students achieve to the highest level possible in our subject.”

“The value we place on seeing artwork in a gallery situation and that the students work so hard with the best quality materials in fantastic facilities. I don’t think a student could get a better experience of our subject anywhere else in the world.”

James loves theatre and film, the Art Department’s Viner Gallery is located next to our Hutton Theatre ensuring Art and Drama Departments work seamlessly alongside each other.

One of the great things about working in the Art Department at WGS is taking part in the wonderful Easter Art & Culture Visits. We have travelled as far as Amsterdam, Barcelona, New York, Paris, Rome and Venice to name but a few and seen some of the greatest masterpieces of all time.
